Lanjarón: Healing Springs, Mountain Views and Moorish Charm

If you have a holiday home in Spain near Granada, Lanjarón is an excursion destination with a character all its own. This village in the Alpujarras is best known for its mineral water and healing springs. At the same time it brings together nature, history and regional cuisine in a way that goes far beyond a quick photo stop.

Lanjarón lies about 40 kilometres from Granada, to the east of the Lecrín Valley and in the heart of the Sierra Nevada National Park. Its location alone explains why the village attracts so many visitors. Impressive hikes through the mountain landscape start here. Anyone who likes to be outdoors can explore the surroundings step by step and enjoy wide panoramic views again and again.

Spa town with a long history

The healing springs have shaped Lanjarón for centuries. They gave the village its reputation as a spa town and still make it well known today. Yet Lanjarón is not only a place to relax, but also a village where history feels tangible. As you walk through the old town, narrow streets lead to small squares and viewpoints, many of them with a clearly Arabic influence.

The Moorish architecture recalls the era of the Moriscos, whose culture remained strong here until around 1500. Later conflicts with the Spanish conquerors led to the destruction of the Moorish fortress. Even so, remains have survived to this day that show how important Lanjarón once was in the Arab-Andalusian period. A Christian church was later built on the same site, but it too was destroyed only a few decades afterwards.

Regional cuisine in a historic setting

Today a restaurant stands within the ruins of the former fortress. It is a place to enjoy the region’s traditional cuisine in an unusual setting. The menu includes dishes such as arroz con conejo, rice with rabbit, and potaje de hinojos, a fennel stew.

The surrounding area is also worth a look for regional specialities. In the Alpujarras visitors will find products such as blood sausage, air-dried salami and cured ham. This down-to-earth cuisine suits the mountain region and feels pleasantly unpretentious. A visit to Lanjarón is therefore not only a way to discover the village in a scenic and cultural sense, but also to get to know it through its food.

Between Sierra Nevada and Costa Tropical

One major advantage is its position between mountains and sea. The Costa Tropical is only about 16 kilometres away as the crow flies. By car the beaches can be reached in around half an hour. This makes Lanjarón especially appealing for holidaymakers who want to combine mountain villages, nature and the coast in a single excursion.

This combination is part of its charm. A day here can take very different shapes: stroll through the old town in the morning, sample regional dishes at lunchtime and head to the sea later on. Or stay in the mountains, follow the hiking trails and enjoy the quiet of the landscape.

Why Lanjarón is worth a visit

Lanjarón brings together many of Andalusia’s highlights in a compact space: healing springs, Moorish traces, good food, attractive hiking routes and easy access to the Costa Tropical. Anyone spending a holiday in the Granada area should therefore see it as more than a brief stop and plan some time to explore it properly.

This is precisely what makes Lanjarón so memorable. No single attraction dominates. Instead it is the interplay of views, history, atmosphere and local everyday life that stays with you.
