Road Trip through Catalonia: From the Pyrenees to the Sea
This 5-day route through Catalonia leads from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava and highlights nature, villages, churches and the Dalí Triangle.

This five-day route through Catalonia shows how close high mountains, cultural heritage and the Mediterranean coast lie to one another. The road trip covers around 475 kilometers from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava. Along the way, mountain landscapes, Romanesque architecture, medieval towns and striking stretches of coastline alternate. The route is ideal for travelers who like to be active, enjoy hiking and want to experience culture beyond a passing glance.
The journey starts in the Vall d’Aran, a distinctive mountain region in the Catalan Pyrenees. Vielha is a good first stop to get a feel for the area. The drive through the Baricauba forest is also appealing and has a character of its own depending on the season, especially in spring and winter. The route then continues along the N-230 into the Vall de Boí. This region is best known for its Romanesque churches, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage and set in an impressive landscape. Travelers who want to learn more about their history will find helpful information at the Centro del Románico de la Vall de Boí.
Day 2: Nature in the National Park
The second day focuses on nature. Close to the Vall de Boí lies the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, one of Catalonia’s most renowned natural landscapes. It is a good choice for anyone looking for hiking trails, mountain lakes and clear air. Afterward, the route follows the N-260 to Pallars Sobirà. This area is especially popular with travelers who enjoy adventure and active holidays. Whitewater sports and other outdoor activities shape the region.
Day 3: Romanesque Heritage, Monastery and Sports
The third section links Seu d’Urgell with Ripoll. In Seu d’Urgell, visitors can see Catalonia’s only completely Romanesque cathedral. The journey then continues to Ripoll, where the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll is one of the main sights. The cloister and the Romanesque portal in particular make the visit worthwhile. Travelers who are looking for some exercise between cultural stops can plan a break at the La Molina ski resort, which offers sports activities all year round.
Day 4: Volcanic Landscape and Medieval Towns
On the fourth day, the landscape changes again. La Garrotxa is known for its volcanic scenery. More than 40 craters covered in vegetation define the region. The area already feels special from the ground, but the view from above adds another dimension. A hot air balloon flight is therefore an exciting way to experience La Garrotxa. Afterward, it is worth visiting medieval towns such as Beget, Besalú and Santa Pau. With their narrow streets and historic buildings, they convey a calm, almost timeless atmosphere.
Day 5: Arrival at the Costa Brava
The route ends at the Costa Brava and the Mediterranean Sea. After several days in the mountains, the coast offers a strong visual contrast. At the same time, another cultural highlight awaits. The so-called Dalí Triangle links the Gala Dalí Castle, the Dalí Theatre-Museum and the Salvador Dalí House-Museum. The road trip thus finishes not only by the sea, but also with a distinctive artistic note.
This round trip through Catalonia is compact yet diverse. It brings together landscapes, outdoor activities and history in a small area and shows how varied the region between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean can be.
